Chapter One
Sokorra Arnelli watched as her latest security program downloaded onto her computer. She sighed. She hated updating her computer so much, but such was necessary for her occupation. To the public, she was just Kori Arnelli, a single mother who happened to be a forensic scientist. No one, save her sisters, knew her truly. She stayed away from relationships so no one would get hurt. That was why she had left the love of her life almost four years ago. She could never let him be part of her life. There was too much danger.
She flipped a piece of her long black hair back over her shoulders and sighed again. To most people, she and her sisters were beauties. Kori herself had long black hair that reached past her waist; she was even able to sit on it. She wasn’t overweight, but she was not thin either. Most of it was from giving birth; something she had hoped would go away. She was tall, which she was glad for, at five feet eleven inches. She was not an athlete but her body was built in a way that people could be deceived and think she was. She, according to her own opinion, was no beauty, least against her sisters.
Amarisa was four years older then Kori, but did not look a day older. In fact, she looked like she could be her twin. Her black hair was cut into a fashionable shoulder length. Her blue eyes, identical to her sisters, shone though a pair of glasses that she kept, as her eyes often got sore when she wore contacts. She was often called the intelligent one in the family, although all three girls were quite intelligent. It was just Amarisa had that aura around her
The oldest sister, Janna, was quite different then her sisters. She took more after their French mother then their Italian father. She had short, stylish hair that complemented her blue eyes. She was the same height as her sisters were. Her calm attitude towards everything masked the wild side her sisters knew. She was a senator so she had to be ‘professional’ though she hated it.
The youngest member of the Arnelli family was Kori’s daughter, Anna Marie Lewis. She looked like her father, except her eyes. Her eyes were her mothers. She was everyone’s favorite person, and often, if there were any fights, which were rare to begin with, they would be about her. Amarisa and Janna thought their sister’s choice about her daughter wrong, and hoped Kori would see that as well.
Kori looked up as her sister Ami walked into the room. She carried the mail and threw it onto the table Kori used as a desk.
"More mail for a Mrs. Lewis. I can’t wait to see when Annie-doll goes to school. Think you can handle it, sis." Ami’s tone was teasing but she knew she hit the mark. Kori was no longer married to Rob, but yet she still got mail addressed as "Mrs. Lewis" and when Anna went to school, it would be worse. Every time she heard that name, it always made her wonder what would have happened if she had not let go.
Harry Potter looked around the dinner. Glancing back down at his picture. He then regarded the man sitting in the back at the bar; he knew he had found the right place. However, from the looks of it, this wasn’t that great of a time.
Robert Lewis sat in the back, unnoticeable to those not looking for him, drinking another shot of some alcoholic drink; Harry guessed it to be tequila. Obviously, he wanted to be alone and drunk. From the strong mental drifts Harry got, he figured his sources were right. Lily Moore, Rob’s ex-girlfriend had left him for Ryan Madsen, an aerobics instructor. He also had lost his job as a janitor. What a great mood, Harry thought, to have a person come up to you and ask about your former love. Harry took a deep breath, strode over to the man, and tapped him on his shoulder.
"Mr. Lewis?" The man looked at him suspiciously.
"Why is there a half shaved penguin behind you?" Ok, Robert was really drunk, but Harry was not in the mood for Billy Madisons right now.
"Are you Robert Lewis?" he asked again. The man, who Harry guessed was no older then 22, brought his eyes back up to Harry.
"Yes. And you?"
"I’m James Potter." No use making the man think Harry was insane.
"Oh. You look familiar."
"Umm…Thanks. May I sit down"?
"I guess. It is not my bar. Just don’t sit on the penguin."
"Excuse me, Monsieur." Harry sat down beside the man and watched him for a second. The man was not all that tall, maybe an inch under six feet. He had blondish-brown hair and blue-green eyes. " Robert, do you know a Miss Arnelli? Amarisa Arnelli."
"Ah…Amidoll! Orange Tequila Queen."
"What? Oh, never mind. Do you know where I can find her?"
"Yeah, cross the street, go down a block, and you’ll see her standing in front of a Harry Pottor poster, as she wants it for book 300.
"300?"
"Maybe less. I don’t know. Me n’ Kori liked star wars."
"Kori? Who is Kori?"
"The Bubblelious Gummy Bear" Harry was confused. What did candy have to do with Kori? "And Janna was Black Osiris Wild Child!" Well, that was a new one.
"And Anna." Harry’s sources were Fred and George. The two had made a point of nearly stalking Robert and then the girls. Harry was just here to find more about them so he could easily protect them without them knowing. Fred had taken a liking to the blond one and had ended up babysitting Annie in order to see her again. Although the farthest he got was getting thrown up upon by the cat.
"Don’t know her."
"She is Kori’s kid." Harry took a drink of the beer the bar tender poured him. The stuff was weak. He was used to English beer. After drinking the tasteless beer, he turned to Robert who was staring straight in front of him, his shot glass halfway to his mouth.
"Her Daughter?" Well, that had sobered him up a little.
"Yes, why?"
"I never knew Kor had a baby girl. How old is she?" Robert brought the glass to his mouth and took a drink. Mentally to himself he said please not three years, not three years. Please say I wasn’t lied to.
"Three years and three months." Although it wasn’t hard for Harry, most people wouldn’t have noticed his pained expression. He hadn’t known about Annie.
"Anna Maria?"
"Yes, I think that’s her name. Why?"
"That’s what I told Kori I would name my daughter if I ever had one." It donned on Harry then, and he cursed mentally at Fred for withholding this information, that Annie was Robert Lewis’ daughter.
"Mr. Lewis, Will you come with me. I need to talk to you privately.
"Umm…Sure. But you have to have a code name. The Thresters will not allow to into their group with-out a code name." Well, that explained the weird nicknames. "You can be magic boy. Do you know you look like Harry Potter?"
"No, you’re the first one to tell me that." Harry lied. "What is your code name?"
"Jedi Prince Lover boy."
" Interesting."
"Soki was going to be Jedi Princess but we decided on Gummy bear instead. She had this shampoo that smelled like gummy bears when she washed her hair." Oh great not another nickname.
Fred you are sooooo dead. You are supposed to tell me everything you found out!
I did. Even I am not given all the facts. He knows more because he was IN the group, not surfing for answers on the surface. OH NO!!! Remind me never to have children. Annie is drawing her mother on my books with a white crayon…not my cloak too!!! Harry couldn’t help but laugh at his friend’s predicament and think that he deserved it.
He led Robert into a large Museum. Once inside he made it look like his companion and he were just viewing the art. Then he hid himself in the Men’s bathroom on the Egyptian hall. Robert had more of a problem, finding he had to use one because of the hangover he had. After the guards had left (surprisingly enough not finding the two despite the noise the made…most likely because Harry had placed a silencing spell on the bathroom. Later he would put on Robert to make him somewhat of use and at least lucid.
Harry nearly had to drag Robert out to the main hallway, underneath his invisibility cloak. There he met Duo Maxwell, his partner in crime. In this case, his partner in protection. Duo was from another dimension then the one they were in and certainly not the same as Harry was from. He had his long braided hair stuck inside the back of his shirt. He was dressed like a security worker showing how easily he could get into places.
"Hello Ha…James." He said. He looked down at at the man who was now passed out on the marble floor. "Who’s the idiot?"
"Robert Lewis."
"The kid sister’s husband?"
"Husband?"
"Didn’t you get my messages? I found out that he was married to Sokorra Arinelli four and a half years ago. They have a three year old daughter named Anna Lewis."
"Anna I knew about, their marriage I did not. In fact only today did I learn it was his daughter." Once again, Harry cursed at Fred and George under his breath.
"Well it is true. You better give the guy some kind of healing spell, cuz right now he is waking up and he fell to that floor hard!" Harry quickly did as Duo said, and helped Robert up. He layered on an Anti-hangover potion he had learned simply because Ron liked wild parties like his brothers and he didn’t want his friend in trouble. Now it served him another purpose.
"Where am I? Last time I was in Al’s dinner and bar?"
"Your at the Forma California Museum."
"Where?"
"The art museum…."
"Where you three are about to be in big trouble." The three turned to look at the speaker to find Amarisa staring at them. Behind her stood her two sisters. Janna looked mad, Amarisa surprised, Sokorra shocked and horrified. Harry wished she would block her emotions. Obviously, this was why they were not together anymore, Robert and she. She thought it too dangerous for him. She was scared that she might lose him and didn’t want that.
In addition, Amarisa was right. They were in for big trouble. They just didn’t realize how much yet.
Robert sat down on the bed after Kori had practically pushed him into the room. Now she paced in front of him, her body tensed in anger only directed at him.
"Hate leads to the dark side." Kori glared him for a moment and then continued to pace. She stopped in front of him and glared for a second before she began to speak.
"What the hell were you doing at that museum?"
"No clue. Why don’t you ask Magic-boy out there? What is it to you anyway?"
"Umm…lets see…. You could have been killed, hurt, arrested or even worse, put in jail for the next five years!"
"Being in Jail for five years is worse then death."
"Have you seen some of the people in those jails?"
"Ok, maybe it is. If that could happen, why were you there?"
"I was there to retrieve an item that needed to be returned to its proper owner."
"And that would be different from me being there because…?" Kori once again glared at him.
"There is a huge difference. I am trained in sleuthing and you are not. I know how to by-pass security systems, you do not. There is a lot of more differences I sure."
"I still don’t see how it is safer for you to be there then me."
"Because, Block-head, I know how to protect myself fro…"
"Mommy?" Came a small voice from the doorway. Robert and Kori turned to find a small child carrying her green blanket and ‘Mr. Snuggles’, her stuffed toy bat. Robert was stunned at the sudden change in Kori as she went from being mad at him to loving mother in seconds
"Yes, Annie?"
"Whose that?" Annie looked at Robert and he smiled back at her. Tell her the truth Soki, please just tell her the truth. Kori hesitated for a second.
"Your Daddy." Kori didn’t look at him. She was still under the impression that he had not known about Annie. Robert turned his attention to his daughter and smiled again, receiving a smile from her in return. The small toddler ran to him and he found himself in a hug with her and the periwinkle bat, pushing him down upon the bed. He smiled and hugged her back.
He looked over and saw Kori in the corner of the room, leaning up against the wall. Tears were coming down her face. He couldn’t tell whether or not it was because of him or because she was happy about Annie. She was smiling, but after knowing for the time he did, he knew that didn’t mean a thing.
It was then that Robert realized that she really cared about him. She hadn’t been mad that he had stopped what she was doing, but at the fact that he had put himself in danger. He also realized that perhaps that was the main factor in her decision to break-up with him. Her occupation was not necessarily a safe one and for some reason above all else, she wanted HIM to be safe.
"Soki, come here." He usually called her Kori, like everyone else, but his own special nickname was ‘Soki’. He had given it to her on their wedding night… well if you could call it a wedding night. It had really been their senior trip to Las Vegas and they, along with a group of students and one teacher, had gotten drunk. Somehow, they had made their way to a chapel there without being killed by either jaywalking or passing out and getting stomped over. Their alcohol infused minds had decided that they had dated long enough and they were going to get married. He was going to annual it but he never got to do it and to this day, they were still married. Technically, they had been married for a little over four years.
After the ceremony, if you call getting married by something that resembled a large Yoda slash bantha a ceremony, they had gone back to the hotel and spent the night watching movies. He was sure something else had happened, but he could only remember watching The Phantom Menace on Pay-Per-view and yelling "Long Live Yoda, King of Universe!"
Ami had shared a room with her that night, but had been out at the pool for the all night adult swim. At least that night he was lucky enough to be alone with Kori.
Kori walked towards him and sat at the edge of the bed. Robert sat up and moved so he had his back against the headboard, careful not to awake his sleeping daughter. Kori sat beside him and for a few moments the sat in a happy silence as they both gazed at the little girl.
"She doesn’t have a hard time falling asleep. As long as she feels safe, she’ll be out in a second. She loves you already. She isn’t like this to most strangers."
"Hopefully I won’t stay a stranger." Kali looked away before nodding.
"She’s a lot like you."
"Really?"
"Yeah. She is too nice for her own good and cute as hell." Robert laughed at that
"I take that as a compliment." Kori smiled at him. He leaned in and was about to kiss her when Annie suddenly woke up.
"Mommy!"
"Yes, Annie love?"
"Can Daddy stay with us now." Kori smiled.
"There are no rooms for him. Where is he going to sleep?"
"Why can’t you share a room? Lana’s parents do." Kali groaned as Robert bit back a laugh.
"Sure love." Kori shot him a glare. "But now you need to go to bed." Annie nodded and got off her mother’s bed. Before she went, she grabbed her father’s hand and pulled. Robert got up and followed her into her room, and tucked her into bed. After he sang her a song and she fell asleep, he kissed her forehead and returned with Kori to the other room.
"Why didn’t you tell me about her? It would have been nice to find out from you then from Magic-boy."
"What did you want me to say? ‘ Oh, by the way despite the fact that I dumped you last month, I just found out I’m two months pregnant.’ I didn’t think you would want to know anyway."
"I would have and you know it"
"The bigger problem in this case was not that I lied but how are you going to explain this to Lily?"
"That will not be a problem. It seems the bitch left me for the aerobics instructor."
"Powerful words there, Rob. Let me guess, Ryan?"
"Yes, how did you know?"
"I was in Lily’s aerobics class. That is how I knew about you and her. She liked to rub it into my face. I always thought those two were a little two close for a platonic relationship. I’m sorry"
"Why? It is not as if it is your fault. Besides, it was just a cap to a bad day. I lost my job today. They replaced me with robots…can you believe that. Robots!"
"Nothing could replace you Rob." Kori turned to go away but Robert stopped her.
"Why did you leave me, Soki?"
"Because I loved too much to put you in danger and staying with you would do exactly that. You should go to bed."
"Where are you going to sleep?"
"In my office." She smiled and walked away.
"I think that it was her right as a mother to not tell him" Amarisa said, sitting at the kitchen table with her mug of hot Cocoa. Across from her sat Harry, who was drinking some herbal tea.
"How? Robert had the right to know he had a child."
"They were separated. How was she to know he would be there for Annie?"
"I think Annie deserved both parents. It was not right for your sister to deprive her daughter of a father." Amarisa sighted and set her cup down.
"They were different back then, things change. He is here now, that is all that matters."
"No, that is not all that matters!" Harry exclaimed, setting his cup of tea down on the table with a little bit more force. "That child has gone three years without a father and Robert has gone three years without the knowledge that he had a daughter. He has lived that long with a part of him missing all because of your sister’s decision."
"How can a part of him be missing if he didn’t even know he had it in the first place?"
"It is very possible to live a part of you missing without your knowledge of it because you find it later in life."
"Precisely. He found her and Kori. During those three years, he had another love."
"Which would have been prevented if Kori had simply told him the truth."
"You don’t get it. Lily ended up leaving him for her aerobics instructor, which told them they were not to be. Then, in meeting you, he found Kori again and his daughter. Everything has been righted now. Don’t you think this little turn of events should tell him something?"
"Depends. Besides, it was Kori who left not Robert. She may do it again."
"Kori was afraid that if she let someone into her heart, someone will try to kill that person simply to hurt her. She left Robert because she never wanted him to get hurt."
"But what about Annie?"
"She had no choice on that. She didn’t find out she was pregnant until after she broke up with Robert."
"But the child still deserved to know she had a father."
"Well she has always known. What, do you think she thought her mother artificially inseminated herself?"
"…You know what I mean."
"But Duo I alr…."
"No But Duos. I am going to teach you this. You have to know some way of defending yourself."
"But I…"
"What did I say? Now you first do thi… " Suddenly Duo found himself lying on the floor with no breath left in his body. At the sound of the noise, Amarisa and Harry had rushed into the room.
"I tried to tell you I already knew what to do but you wouldn’t listen."
"What happened to you?" Harry asked?
"Ah…"
"Never mind. I don’t want to know. Let me guess, you want me to use one of my potions to help you?" Duo nodded. Harry looked as if he was considering it and then smiled. "Naw. I let you learn from your own mistakes. I am going to bed." Harry then walked away and laughed as he caught the glare that the Gundam pilot sent him.
