Prologue
Wind screamed as it flew though the holes in the rock, making the night seem menacing. The five hobbits huddled together; more in fear then need of warmth, as a fire was nearby. Three of the Hobbits were actually asleep, although it appeared, even to Strider, that all were asleep. Young Meriadoc Brandybuck lay still awake, watching the outside carefully though he trusted the ranger. Strider was nowhere in Merry's eyesight, so he was being extra careful. Dolly Overhill watched as well.
Suddenly a burst of wind flew into the weather top watchtower, making a howling noise so great that all of the hobbits awoke suddenly. Merry and Sam Gamgee instantly grabbed their swords and stood in front of the other three. It did take the others very long to get their own. Strider was still nowhere to be found.
Suddenly a black figure came into view. Behind him was another Rider and another followed that one. They were beginning to become helplessly outnumbered. Merry took a deep breath and looked at Sam. Sam understood and stood in front of Frodo directly and Merry in front of their cousin Peregrin Took. Dolly was shifted to the back.
Merry screamed no as he saw Sam being thrown away from Frodo. He had to help someway. He had promised himself that he would see no harm come to his cousin and he would stick by it. Frodo had a mission that HAD to be completed, so it mattered little what happened to him.
He did the first thing that came to mind and jumped in front of his cousin, receiving the blow meant for Frodo. The blade went though his chest and into Frodo's left shoulder. Merry slumped to the ground ignoring the burning pain that rushed though him. He looked over to see Frodo take the ring off his finger. Merry had not noticed Frodo wearing the ring, and wondered what allowed him to see Frodo. He felt cold but ignored it as he tried to run back to his friend, who had been thrown by the motion to a corner.
"Frodo?" He asked, his voice not really above a whisper, getting worried glances from Sam as well as Pippin. Strider, who had returned from fighting the Nazguls, also glanced worriedly at the small hobbit.
"Frodo, I'm sorry...I..." Then darkness took him, and he saw no more.
